Earlier this month, Henderson State University announced that basketball player Jamarion Brown died at the young age of 23.

According to a report from KLTV, Brown was shot at a pool party in east Camp County on May 23. Authorities took him to the hospital, but it was unfortunately too late. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the Henderson State basketball player passed away.

"Jamarion Brown, a member of Shepard Street Church of Christ, joined the Body of Christ on April 18, 2012. Passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and determination. He was a shining light to all who knew him, remembered for his warm spirit, deep commitment to family, and passion for basketball. Jamarion was a proud graduate of Southwestern Christian College, where he completed his studies with honors. His academic success was matched by his athletic talent, and after graduation he continued his education and athletic career at Henderson State University. There he became a valued asset to the University basketball team, earning the admiration of teammates, coaches, and fellow students alike," his obituary states.

"Basketball was one of Jamarion’s greatest passions, a game he played with heart, discipline, and joy. His other passion was family – the center of his life and the source of his strength. Whether on or off the court, Jamarion’s kindness, determination, and dedication were evident in everything that he did."

It didn't take long for the authorities to make progress in their investigation.

The Camp County Sheriff's Office has arrested Onterrian Jamour Newton in connection to this shooting. The 17-year-old is facing a murder charge as well as other pending charges.

As you'd imagine, the Henderson State men's basketball team is devastated over Brown's death.

"No words can express our sadness for Jamarion’s family, friends, and teammates," Henderson State coach Jimmy Elgas said. "We lift them all up in prayer. Jo’s impact was felt not only on the basketball court, but throughout the fabric of Henderson State University, and we all grieve together. His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus, but Jo will be remembered and honored in our hearts forever."

Brown averaged 6.5 points per game for Henderson State this past season.

Our thoughts are with Brown's family and friends.
