The St. Louis Battlehawks fall to 2-2 on the season
Despite great games from Hakeem Butler (again) , Tucker McCann, and Jarveon Howard , St. Louis fell to their rivals from DC on Saturday. McCann hit a 51-yard field goal to open the scoring and give St. Louis an early 3-0 lead. Then DC’s Jordan Ta’amu went to work. Ta’amu would have a great game for DC, and would lead them on an 11-play 72-yard touchdown drive to take an early 7-3 lead. Early in the second quarter, Hakeem Butler would strike for St. Louis.

Butler’s 75-yard touchdown catch and run would put St. Louis back in front, 9-7. The problem is that would be about all she wrote for the Battlehawks’ passing game. Outside of that play, Harrison Frost would be 5 of 20 for 69 yards and an interception in the rest of the game. He’d also make a costly second-half blunder. Ta’amu would be the polar opposite. After a field goal retook the lead for DC, Ta’amu would lead the Defenders on another long touchdown drive. This one was for 65 yards and ended with another touchdown pass for DC. St. Louis would tack on another field goal just before halftime.
Special teams would be the story of the second half. DC would get 11 points in the final two quarters, nine off of field goals and two off a safety. The safety came when Harrison Frost was sacked in his own end zone. Jordan Ta’amu would be as good for DC as Frost was bad for St. Louis. Ta’amu would finish the game 22 of 36 for 2024 yards and two touchdowns, and would add 61 rushing yards for DC, too.

St. Louis would attempt a comeback when trailing 25-12 in the fourth quarter. Kevin Latulas would score a touchdown from seven yards out. DC and St. Louis would trade field goals, and the Battlehawks would get the ball back, down six, with 1:23 to go. A Harrison Frost interception would end the scoring threat and the game, giving DC the 28-22 win.
St. Louis will now have to try to weather the perfect storm. The Orlando Storm are 4-0 and will host the 2-2 Battlehawks on Saturday, April 25th . This could be the beginning of another rivalry as Orlando is led by former Battlehawks head coach Anthony Becht. That familiarity will make St. Louis’ players and fans want this one that much more.
