Who were the best-dressed athletes in 2016? Who were the worst? It's time to take a look back at this fashion hits and misses in sports.

We have to start this list off with the most recent winner of Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year, who dressed rather appropriately for the occasion as well. He's arguably the best player in the NBA and definitely one of the most well-dressed players in the league today.

Worst: Russell Westbrook

While some athletes are famous for their sense of fashion, Russell Westbrook has become rather infamous for his looks. He rarely wears outfits that are aesthetically pleasing, but we'd be lying if we said that we don't look forward to seeing what zany outfit the superstar point guard is going to break out on a nightly basis.

If you're married to a supermodel, then you better be able to look the part. Tom Brady has done just that for years now, and he's showed no signs of slowing down when it comes to being the NFL's most fashionable QB.

The best-looking thing in this photo is the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Other than that, Peyton Manning dresses like your dad when he's trying to be dapper on Easter Sunday. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it's not the best.

Dwyane Wade is another athlete who's done a great job of staying sharp over a long period of time. You really have to do so if you're the face of a high-profile sports franchise in Miami, but even in Chicago, Wade continues to be a shining light of athlete fashion.

Worst: Von Miller

Just look at that jacket Von Miller is wearing. Just look at it. Take it all in. Never mind the big, dominating cowboy hat that he's sporting. Just look at the jacket. This is absolutely astonishing, and it's basically his fashion sense in a nutshell.

It really shouldn't be a surprise to see Serena Williams at the forefront of fashion in sports. She's always had a strong interest in fashion, so it's natural that she'd continue to be one of the best-dressed athletes today.

Worst: Tim Duncan

The legendary Tim Duncan exited the league the same way he entered it — in an ill-fitting button-up shirt and jeans. His impact on the game of basketball was incredible, and the fact that he was able to do so with such a deep lack of fashion sense is equally incredible.

Plenty of athletes like to take risks with their fashion, but one player who gets high rewards out of his high risks is Odell Beckham Jr. He's always pushing the envelope, but he rarely ever comes off as tacky.

If you're pushing jeans made by Wrangler, then you're going to earn a spot on this side of the list more often than not. He may still be a solid player on the field, but he isn't exactly a fashion-forward leader off of it.

The NYCFC midfielder instantly took the spot of being the leader in fashion when it comes to Major League Soccer when he made his arrival to the league, and he's still by far the best-dressed player in America's top soccer league.

The Pacers superstar and NBA 2K17 cover boy is known for being one of the league's most dynamic players. However, it's probably a good thing that the powers that be posted him in his uniform on the cover of the video game — it would've been a big folly on 2K Sports' part if it showed him wearing anything other than that.

New York's netminder has always been one of the best-dressed players in the NHL, and Henrik Lundqvist kept it up in 2016 as he continued to keep the style levels sky-high off the ice.

2016 wound up being a rough year for Ryan Lochte, and it didn't help that he compounded some unfortunate overall choices with some equally unfortunate fashion choices.

Best: Skylar Diggins

When she missed the vast majority of the 2015 WNBA season due to injury, she at least lit up the sidelines with her incredible sense of fashion. She played a lot more in 2016, but she still managed to shine off the court when it came to dressing up.

Worst: German Olympic Team

The German Olympic Team was easily the worst-dressed squad at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games. This would've been a decent look, but the jackets were just incredibly bad.

Carmelo Anthony has come a long way from his days as a rookie in the early 2000s. Back then, he would've been considered one of the worst-dressed athletes in sports, but now he's known for being a fashion-forward athlete. He even has impeccable taste in hats, which only enhances any particular look that he chooses to go with.

Worst: Ethiopian Olympic Team

From afar, the Ethiopian squad looked like it was wearing gradients. That's a big no-no no matter what fashion era you're in.

Best: Craig Sager

We have to pay tribute to the legendary Craig Sager, who recently passed away after a brave fight with cancer, even though he technically wasn't an athlete. The courtside reporter was not only incredible at his job, but he left an indelible impact on even casual sports fans with his incredibly unique sense of fashion. The sports world is worse off without him and his funky suits.

Worst: Cam Newton

It's fitting that Cam Newton's most recent mini-controversy involved a fashion choice. Reportedly, he was benched for the first drive of a game for not wearing a tie. If we're suspending people for bad fashion choices, then maybe Cam Newton will have to sit out a few games here and there whenever he busts out a ridiculous look.
