The Milwaukee Brewers can close out their 2025 NLDS against the Chicago Cubs as soon as this Wednesday at Wrigley Field in the Windy City. Through two games in the series, Pat Murphy’s side has dominated Chicago, hence the 2-0 advantage.
But sometimes, success breeds hate — and that’s where some Chicago fans are when it comes to the Brewers. Well, as an NL Central rival of their team, Cubs fans naturally don’t love the idea of seeing the Brewers dominate. Some fans just take it a bit far.
To that, former Wisconsin Badgers basketball star Sam Dekker has a fierce take.
Responding to a fan who so explicitly expressed his disdain for the Brewers, Dekker laid out a passionate defense of the baseball team he loves.
“Hating the Brewers is so fake and manufactured. Smallest market in pro sports, no championships, no bad people on their team, mostly young guys and journeymen, and a fan base that just wants to drink beer and cheer for their team,” Dekker wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Dekker clearly has a point. The Brewers are often overlooked despite what they have managed to do over the past several seasons, which is to make the postseason consistently despite a relatively meager budget. Among the remaining teams in the 2025 playoffs, only the Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers and the Brewers are outside of the top 10 in total team payroll, per Spotrac.
Even then, there is a big gap between the Mariners and the Brewers and also between Detroit and Milwaukee. Seattle is 12th with a $164.5 million payroll, while the Tigers are 14th with a $157.5 million mark. Milwaukee is 17th with just $121.64 million.
If anything, it makes Brewers fans show stronger support for their team, which they are doing amid a dominant NLDS performance against the Cubs.
