On Sunday, Sept. 7 the Cleveland Browns are set to face off against AFC North foe Cincinnati.
In the days leading up to the game, NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic revealed Browns fans shouldn't expect to see much of quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who appears failed to win the starting quarterback job.
"For all the football conspiracy theorists out there trying to decode the real reason the Cleveland Browns drafted Shedeur Sanders, here’s the truth: There is no big secret. The pick wasn’t some master plan from ownership. It was GM Andrew Berry’s call, rooted in his belief that Cleveland’s coaching staff could bring out the best in Sanders and help him grow into an NFL quarterback. It will be a process, and the Browns want to keep developing him," Russini said before revealing the team's plans for the young quarterback.
"However, don’t plan on seeing the fifth-round rookie on the field this season unless things get really weird. Cleveland believes in Joe Flacco’s experience and Dillon Gabriel’s development as the backup."
After making his final appearance during the preseason, Sanders made it clear he's proud of his accomplishments thus far.
"I think overall as a player, I feel like I've put in the work. I feel like everything I do, I try to do it to my best and that's all (I) can ask for, so … I feel like everybody feels like they should be on the team," he said at the time. "And if you ask anybody on the team would they feel they belong, they belong in their own eyes. I feel like I do, but I'm my own player. I think about myself in high regard."
Before Sunday's game between the Browns and Bengals, Cincinnati revealed its list of inactive players, which included the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback and son of NFL legend Deion Sanders.
Defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., guard Zak Zinter, tackle KT Leveson and wide receiver Gage Larvadain joined Sanders on the list of players not suiting up against Cincinnati.
Sanders will serve as the team's emergency quarterback in the event Joe Flacco and Dillion Gabriel can't play.
The Browns and Bengals kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Fox.
