The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed veteran offensive tackle Charlie Heck to a one-year, $1.57 million deal on March 13, initially expecting him to serve as a backup and provide depth to the team. Heck, a former fourth-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2020, has previously played for the Texans, Arizona Cardinals, and San Francisco 49ers.

However, with Tristan Wirfs undergoing knee surgery, Heck’s role has shifted, and he’s now poised to start at right tackle. Wirfs’ expected return in Week 4 could see Heck revert to his backup role, but for now, he’s taking on significant playing time. Heck’s contract includes $400,000 i n guaranteed money and an average annual salary of $1.57 million.

Heck’s role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has suddenly shifted into high gear. Although Tristan Wirfs is irreplaceable, Heck will take on the crucial task of protecting quarterback Baker Mayfield until Wirfs recovers from his knee surgery.

When Heck signed with the Buccaneers, he expressed his enthusiasm for joining the team, citing their Super Bowl potential as a major draw. “I’m really excited to be here,” Heck said via PewterReport.com. “I’ve done a workout here before and I’m glad that it came around full circle like this and now I’m back here. I’m excited to be a part of this team.” At the time, Heck didn’t anticipate stepping into the spotlight so quickly, but he’s now ready to fill in until Wirfs returns. “They’re right there,” Heck stated via PewterReport.com. “I’m excited to get here, learn the offense and just be here. They’ve got all of the talent in the world on this offense, so I’m excited.”

Heck was also drawn to the Buccaneers due to his positive impression of the team’s coaching staff, which played a role in his decision to sign with them.

“I mean, just keeping up with different O-lines during my career, this is one that I’ve always kind of kept my eyes on,” Heck added. “It’s been a group that I would be excited to be a part of, so I’m happy to be here. They’ve done a great job.”
