Chicago is finally getting a soccer-specific stadium.
The Chicago Fire announced that they are building a soccer-specific stadium on the 62-acre site at The 78 in Chicago.
The project, which is scheduled to begin in late 2025 or early 2026 and should be completed in time for the 2028 Major League Soccer Season, will be privately financed by Chicago Fire owner and chairman Joe Mansueto with development company Related Midwest handling the project. The soccer-specific stadium will be open-air with a natural grass pitch. There are also plans for a mixed-use district that will be built around the stadium.
This is the second recent construction project for the Fire in Chicago after their practice facility, the Endeavor Health Performance Center, finally opened earlier this year.
The 78 has been a rumored site for a potential new White Sox stadium but talks never progressed due to the baseball team’s desire for subsidies relating to the financing of a potential project.
Now the Fire will have access to that space all to themselves and their owner will be fronting the bill.
