Dabo Swinney thrilled by Trevor Lawrence performance vs. Kansas City Chiefs
[Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union]

Dabo Swinney was thrilled watching Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football. Lawrence led the Jaguars to a 31-28 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Lawrence actually scored the game-winning touchdown with his feet. But, not before he stumbled off the snap, falling on the ground twice, while somehow getting himself up and ran in for the score about a yard-plus out.

Swinney couldn’t even go to sleep until it was all over. But he was proud of his former quarterback who rocked the Clemson orange.

“So happy for Trevor. I mean, just awesome,” Swinney said. “I hate it for Andy Reid, because I love Andy Reid too … They haven’t had quite the start that they want, but they’ll keep playing. I thought they played well, but I was so happy for Trevor. I mean, Travis (Etienne) played awesome. Great to see him have a big game. He’s having a great year … But, I mean, Trevor was, that’s a game he needed, you know, Monday Night Football against Mahomes. It’s his birthday. If you’re going to win it, you’re going to have to make some throws in a (tight) window …

“And he did, I mean, he made some big time plays. The throw to the Thomas kid on the side was a heck of a play. The throw over on the left side. I mean, that was a great play. And then just, you know, he looked like, I mean, that was a complete disaster on the last play, getting stepped on … He got up untouched and was able to get in there.”

Trevor Lawrence still impressing Dabo Swinney

Lawrence finished the game 18-of-25 passing for 221 yards, one touchdown, one interception, 54 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. As Swinney pointed out, the Jaguars are now 4-1 on the season and lead the AFC South. In fact, Lawrence and Jacksonville are tied for the best record in the AFC.

“He made some big plays with his legs, which, we’ve all seen that,” Swinney said. “So I was just really happy for him. It’s just one of those games … that’s a momentum type game, but man, Trevor will be the first guy in the building. He’ll be the first guy back at work. He’ll be the first guy (to say) like, I got to be better. I got to this. I got to that. And, you know, nothing matters.

“You know he won’t be walking around saying, ‘We’re 4-1.’ He’s going to just be focused on trying to win the game.”

Lawrence is in his fifth season since he starred for Swinney and Clemson. The former No. 1 overall pick has 1,066 yards, six touchdowns, five interceptions and a 60.4% completion percentage this year. He also has 86 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
