Daniil Medvedev’s 2025 season went from bad to worse on the opening night of the US Open, as the former champion crashed out in a dramatic and emotional five-set first-round loss. What was expected to be a straightforward encounter turned into one of the most chaotic matches of the tournament so far—marked by high tension, raw emotions, and even an unusual interruption by a photographer that left both players rattled.

The Russian, who has struggled for form throughout the year, found himself unable to take advantage of the key moments. His frustration boiled over after the match, as he destroyed his racquet by violently smashing it against his chair, a sight that left fans stunned at his visible state of despair.

But it wasn’t just his on-court outburst that raised eyebrows. In his post-match interview, Medvedev revealed a startling confession about his mental state during the contest.

“During the match I caught myself thinking that it'd probably be a good idea to retire from tennis at the US Open,” said Medvedev. “Not today- but in general, with a match like this, maybe at 35 years old, when you know it's over. It would be cool but I think there's still a long way to go,” added the Russian.

"When I'm finishing my career you know, you never know where you want to do it. And today I was like this could be a nice place to do it," he said in his post match press conference.

The candid admission signaled just how much the turbulent year has worn down the former world No. 1. Medvedev, who is known for his grit and resilience on court, appeared drained and out of sorts, struggling to find both rhythm and motivation in what should have been a fresh start at a Grand Slam.

While his words suggest that retirement isn’t imminent, they serve as a reminder of the fragile mental balance top athletes have to maintain along with the weight of expectations. For Medvedev, who once stood at the top of men’s tennis, the road back to his best now looks more uncertain than ever.
