In a move that feels both inevitable and a little sad, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have waived Desmond Watson, the undrafted rookie defensive tackle who tipped the scales and headlines, at a staggering 449 pounds. Let’s be honest, in a league obsessed with size, speed, and superhuman genetics, Watson was a beautiful, glorious outlier. A human eclipse. A guy who made William “The Refrigerator” Perry look like a mini-fridge. Where will he land next?

The Weight Of Expectations

From the moment the Bucs signed him out of Florida, Watson’s story was less about football and more about a number. At his pro day, he weighed in at 464 pounds, a figure that makes you double-check if the scale is meant for livestock. He became an instant curiosity, the kind of player you root for simply because his existence defies logic. The Bucs saw a 6-foot-4 mountain of a man who could, in theory, plug up the middle of a defensive line like a cork in a bottle.

The problem? He was never healthy enough to get on the field. Watson spent all of training camp on the non-football injury (NFI) list, a polite NFL term for “get in shape.” Head Coach Todd Bowles kept it professional, saying it was about “trying to get him better, to be a healthier player.” You have to admire the coach-speak, but the message was clear: the number on the scale was preventing him from being a number on the field.

A Dream Deferred, Not Destroyed

You can’t help but feel for Watson. He was keenly aware of his unique status, stating after the draft, “I feel like my name is etched in history… at the same time I don’t want it to be my narrative. I want to be known as a football player.” It is the classic struggle of any athlete who becomes a spectacle. You want the fame, but you want it for your game, not just your frame.

Unfortunately, that narrative will have to be written somewhere else. The Buccaneers decided not to add him to their practice squad for now, cutting him loose outright. It is a tough break for a guy who was trying to slim down and carve out a role. For a team, it’s a simple business decision. For Watson, it is a gut punch.

So what’s next for the biggest man in NFL history? His dream isn’t over. Another team will almost certainly take a flyer on him. The league is full of coaches who believe they can be the one to unlock a player’s potential. Someone will see that raw size and think, “I can work with that.” For Desmond Watson, the challenge remains the same: shed the pounds, shed the label, and finally prove he’s more than just a number.
