Some sad news has hit the hockey world as it learned of the passing of Bruce Hill, the former captain of the Denver University hockey team, at the age of just 60.
The University of Denver hockey program is mourning the passing of former Pioneers captain Bruce Hill, who passed away on May 30 at the age of 60.
Hill played 137 games at DU from 1984 to 1988, was the team captain his last year, and won the Dr. Ralph Verploeg Most Inspirational Player award.
A member of the Pioneers' Century Club, he totaled 101 career points (40 goals, 61 assists), tied for 100th all-time in team history.
A hometown boy from Olds, Alberta, Hill was instrumental in bringing Denver back into national prominence, including an NCAA semifinal showing in 1986, DU's first in 13 years.
The team won both the WCHA regular season and tournament titles in the same campaign.
Hill's best year at DU came in his junior year with 14 goals and 30 points, along with three shorthanded goals, the sixth-most in one DU season. He finished his senior season with eight goals and 16 assists in 36 games.
He spent two years at the Olds Grizzlys (AJHL) before coming to DU and was drafted by the Hartford Whalers in 1985.
Off the ice, Hill earned a bachelor's in business and a master's in computer science from DU. He was a member of Kappa Sigma, a teaching assistant, and later an assistant coach for the Pioneers.
He co-founded a computer business with Bill Carlson, which they ran for nearly two decades.
Born May 17, 1965, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Hill was the youngest of three children. He returned to live out his final years in Canada with relatives after being diagnosed with early-onset dementia.
Left behind are siblings Donna (Harold), Doug (Heide), and Deanne (Rick), who had been reunited with the family only recently. We send Bruce's family and friends our deepest condolences during this tough time.
