The Dolphins were interested in Sanders, and having extensive discussions surrounding him makes a lot of sense. Sanders would've been a tremendous value in the fifth round for any team taking him, and the Dolphins would've benefited from adding him to their quarterback room.
The Dolphins consideration for Sanders is especially interesting. The Dolphins have had issues at backup quarterback, and were rumored to be looking for a new one in the draft. Sanders would've been am immense value in the fifth round.
With Tua Tagovailoa getting hurt, and missing significant time over the past two seasons, the backup quarterback in Miami is likely to get meaningful opportunities.
Adding Sanders, a quarterback that many experts believed could go in the first round of the draft, would've made a ton of sense for the Dolphins. Sanders went at pick 144, with the Dolphins next pick at 150. Miami just missed on Sanders at tremendous value, but they were still able to land a quarterback later in the draft.
At pick 231 in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Dolphins added Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers. He slides in behind Zach Wilson in the Dolphins quarterback room, and will get a chance to compete for the backup spot in training camp and preseason.
The backup quarterback in Miami is more important than other teams backups. With the Dolphins strongly considering Sanders during day three of the draft, the Dolphins were close to adding the player dominating the headlines of the 2025 NFL Draft.
