With just two weeks remaining in the college football season, the coaching carousel is in full swing, and many programs across the country are already looking toward the offseason and their futures. Unfortunately, this means several coaches are being let go, and one high-profile dismissal came on Monday afternoon.
The Florida Atlantic Owls officially announced that after two seasons as the program’s head football coach, Tom Herman has been fired. The program will now look to rebuild, as Florida Atlantic has struggled under Herman’s brief tenure.
Herman still has three years remaining on his contract and is owed approximately $4 million. During his 20 games at the helm, he posted a 6-14 record overall and just three conference victories.
This marks a disappointing turn for the former Texas Longhorns coach, who just a few years ago was considered a top candidate for head coaching jobs nationwide. Now, his future in FBS football is uncertain, and it remains to be seen what opportunities, if any, will be available to him moving forward.

Herman coached at Texas from 2017 to 2020, and at the start of his tenure with the Longhorns, he was regarded as one of the brightest young coaching minds in college football.
However, things quickly took a turn despite his solid overall record of 32-18, three straight winning seasons, and multiple bowl game appearances and victories.
Ultimately, Herman was never able to win a Big 12 championship during his time in Austin, and some of his more immature moments during his tenure, both on and off the field, contributed to his departure from the university.
Some of those same issues surfaced during his time with Florida Atlantic, where he struggled in conference play and was involved in a controversial exchange with South Florida’s head coach following a loss earlier this season.
Now, both Florida Atlantic and Tom Herman will go their separate ways, with each side looking toward future endeavors after a disappointing two-year run.
