Edinburgh Rugby has secured Wes Goosen’s commitment for another two years, a move celebrated by coach Sean Everitt.
The South African, who has New Zealand nationality, joined the Edinburgh club in the 2022/2023 season from Hurricanes. He has emerged as a key player for Sean's side, being the first-choice fullback.
“ I love it here, the boys, and playing under coach Seas and the coaching staff. I have started playing best rugby, and it would be stupid to leave, for there is so much potential here,” Wes said in a statement.
Everit praised Goosen’s consistent high-level performance throughout the season, highlighting his versatility and positive influence in the United Rugby Championship (URC), and sees significant potential for him to reach international status, possibly representing Scotland in 2027.
Wes played for the New Zealand U20 level, where he helped the Baby Blacks win the Oceania Rugby U20 Championship title in May 2015 in Australia.
Goosen first played provincial rugby for Wellington in the 2014 ITM Cup, making his only appearance in a home game loss to Waikato. In the 2015 ITM Cup, he made regular appearances, scoring two tries in nine matches, and later played in the 2016 Mitre 10 Cup.
Hurricanes Head Coach Chris Boys promoted him to the senior squad for the franchise title defense in 2017. He made his Super Rugby debut in the number 11 jersey against the Reds in 2016.
Wes’s impressive displays saw him win the Breadalbane Players’ Player of the Year award for the 2023/2024 season, and he has become a key figure for the Edinburgh side.
Goosen joins a growing list of key players who have recently extended their contracts with Edinburgh, including Ben Vellacoat, Pierre Schoeman, Duhan Van der Merwe, Ben Muncaster, D’arcy Rae, and Matt Currie.
