South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has officially announced his retirement from international cricket. The 32-year-old announced via Instagram, sharing a heartfelt message on his journey with the national team.

“It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket,” Klaasen wrote. “It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision, but also one that I have absolute peace with.”

Klaasen, known for his aggressive batting and calm presence behind the stumps, made his international debut in February 2018 during an ODI against India. He made an immediate impact, earning his first Man of the Match award in just his second game with a blistering 43 off 27 balls. Later that month, he also shone in the T20I format, scoring 69 off 30 balls in a win over India, earning another Man of the Match accolade.

His Test debut came in October 2019 against India, though his appearances in the longest format were limited to just four matches. In February 2020, Klaasen registered his maiden ODI century with an unbeaten 123 against Australia.

Klaasen also took on leadership duties, captaining South Africa’s T20I side on multiple occasions, including series against Pakistan in 2021. He remained part of the national setup through to May 2024, when he was selected for South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad. In June 2024, he made history by scoring the fastest fifty in an ICC tournament final.

“To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career,” Klaasen stated. “I look forward to spending more time with my family. I will always be a big Proteas supporter.”
