As UCLA (1-4) took a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter this afternoon to go up 42-28 over No. 7 Penn State (3-2), is it odd that my first thought was about the chances of the Nittany Lions still being ranked tomorrow? Considering how often the rankings don’t make sense, it isn’t crazy.
But if they are ranked, it might get messy due to the amount of people’s heads exploding across the country. Some people were upset when Penn State only slipped from No. 3 to No. 7 after their overtime loss at home to No. 6 Oregon, but the minimal drop was somewhat understandable.
Except that Penn State never should have been No. 3, considering they began the season with victories against Nevada, Florida International and Villanova. And those victories weren’t dominating.
But now after a 42-37 loss at a previously winless UCLA team that already fired their head coach, there is no rational reason for Penn State to be ranked this week. Even though they showed some fight in the second half, it was against a team that that hadn’t scored more than 23 points in any game this season and lost by 25-points at home to New Mexico (3-2).
So for the sake of everyone’s health, lets all pray that Penn State isn’t ranked tomorrow.
