Trinity Rodman got injured in the last Washington Spirit match, in which they defeated Monterrey 4-0 in the fifth round of the Concacaf W Champions Cup group stage.
Rodman, 23, left the field before the end of the first half on crutches and set off alarms not only for her club but also for the USWNT, since just hours earlier she had been called up again for the late October matches against Portugal on the 23rd and 26th, and New Zealand on the 29th.
Spirit fans were upset with the decision to have Rodman play in a match that did not risk qualification for the next stage of the tournament, and they lashed out both at head coach Adrián González and at the tight schedule the players are subjected to.
On Thursday, an update emerged about the injury of the American forward, who could miss the season.
According to The Athletic's Emily Olsen, Rodman already underwent initial scans this very Thursday, and although the results showed a positive long-term prognosis, it is most likely that she will not return to play this season.
"Rodman underwent initial scans on Thursday, which showed a positive long-term prognosis, according to sources," Olsen wrote. "The current outlook is roughly a three-week rehabilitation process before a reevaluation, which would land around the start of the NWSL quarterfinals."
Olsen also noted that a possible return this same season is not ruled out, but that will depend on how her injury evolves and how far the Spirit goes in the postseason.
"Sources were optimistic and did not rule out a return this season, depending on how the knee injury heals and how far the Spirit makes it into the postseason."
Rodman had earned a new call-up with the USWNT due to her good performances this season. The forward had not been called up since April of this year, primarily because of injuries.
As Olsen explained, the scans she underwent are initial, so it will still be necessary to wait for a more accurate update from Spirit.
