Iran and Gambia face each other in an international friendly match at the Mardan Stadyumu in Antalya, Turkey. The match is part of Iran’s preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico later this year.

Iran have already qualified for the tournament and are using the training camp in Turkey to get the squad ready before travelling to North America.

The team has also had to adjust some of its World Cup planning because of travel and political concerns linked to playing matches in the United States.

Due to the geopolitical tensions and a refusal by the U.S. government to permit overnight stays, Iran's official team base camp has been relocated to Tijuana, Mexico. The team will train at the Xoloitzcuintle Center and cross the border into the United States strictly to play their matches before returning to Mexico.

Managed by Amir Ghalenoei, Iran are appearing in their fourth straight World Cup. Team Melli are currently ranked 21st in the FIFA rankings and will hope to carry good form into the tournament. Gambia, ranked 116th, are using the friendly as preparation for future Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Iran have been drawn in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand. Their opening match is against New Zealand before facing Belgium and Egypt in the group stage.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Iran and Gambia at senior international level.

The match will be played on Friday, May 29, 2026 at the Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya, Turkey. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 PM GMT, which is 11:30 AM EDT in the United States.
