Jake Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) is all set to raise controversy once again, this time as he prepares to face former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) at the Kaseya Center on December 19. With the mismatched fight gaining heat, podcaster Joe Rogan is unsure if Paul is biting more than he can chew.
Talking on his Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Rogan opened up about the proposed fight calling it one of the “craziest” matchups that he’d witnessed.
“Realistically, it’s one of the craziest propositions of all time. You take a guy who just had a boxing match that looked like a sparring match with a 58-year-old Mike Tyson, and then you’re gonna fight one of the absolute scariest knockout artists in the heavyweight division?” he said.
Rogan’s points are justified for sure. Tyson is without a doubt one of the most feared heavyweights of all time. However, the fact that Paul faced him well after the era of his notoriety pretty much cancelled the allure that the matchup had.
And now there is no doubt that by facing Joshua, he will surely be facing one of the best heavyweights in the sport currently. Their sheer size difference aside, with 25 KOs from 28 wins, Joshua is one of the finest knockout maestros of the division.
Meanwhile, Paul still has a lot to prove as a fighter, according to Rogan. Some might say this is his most genuine test yet, as the most evenly matched fight he had was against Tommy Fury, resulted in the only loss of his career.
“He’s gonna be very angry that Jake Paul wants to fight him. Very upset that this YouTuber who’s fought Tommy Fury, who’s a legit boxer, and a couple of other guys who are legit boxers,” he said. Moreover, he had a word of warning for Paul, “That right hand, if it hits you, you are f*cked,’ he warned Paul . ‘This is a giant Olympic gold medallist heavyweight. I mean, Anthony Joshua is f*cking terrifying. He’s got that one punch nuclear power, one punch, and he’s fast. And that’s what he’s gonna try to do to Jake Paul.”
Meanwhile, Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn’s thoughts are in line with those of Rogan’s. Talking to Fight Hub TV, he revealed that Joshua is not going to go easy on Paul, even highlighting that he will know every moment of his fight against AJ.
“Some people say, ‘Is AJ going to go easy on him?’ No. And certainly when he’s saying things like that. He’s kind of got boxing riding on him a little bit in this fight,” he said. “Obviously, he needs to go in and destroy him. This is very real. Once you get hit by AJ, you’ll know all about it. As soon as AJ hits him on the chin, the fight’s over.”
