Joel Embiid may be gearing up for another NBA season, but the Philadelphia 76ers star found himself caught up in F1 drama at Monza.

After McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris swapped positions late in the Italian Grand Prix, Piastri cheekily described it as a “little incident: — a playful nod to Charles Leclerc’s viral karting clip.

The moment quickly lit up social media, but was Embiid’s reaction on X that pushed it into overdrive.

“Their papaya rules are something else lmao… Oscar is a better man than me,” Embiid wrote, referencing McLaren’s trademark philosophy of letting teammates race each other hard but clean.

The NBA star was clearly hinting at what many fans were thinking: if he were in Piastri’s shoes, he wouldn’t have been so quick to give the place back. Norris had lost time through a slow pit stop, and Piastri had built a small cushion yet team orders meant the Australian had to move aside.

Piastri ultimately finished third, securing another podium, but his post-race comments suggest mixed feelings. “Just struggled a bit through the first part of the race. The car wasn’t exactly how I liked it. Once the tyres went away, it felt a bit better which is never a great sign. Happy with the points and I will take it,” he admitted

When pressed on the late swap with Norris, Piastri laughed it off: “A little incident at the end but it's OK!”

That b;end of frustration and good humor earned him plenty of respect. Even though the podium came with a sting, Puastri’s willingness to play along with a meme — and handle a tough team order with grace made him one of the weekend’s most talked about drivers.
