Jon Gruden Gives High Praise to a Big 12 Quarterback Ahead of the NFL Draft

It’s a pretty cool thing to say you’ve played for the legendary Mike Leach, and Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson is one of those lucky ducks.

Leach recruited Robertson to Mississippi State as a true freshman in 2022, and, in two seasons with the late college football veteran, the Baylor graduate spoke with former NFL coach Jon Gruden at length about Leach, his career and what makes him a mid-to-late round victory in this year’s NFL Draft.

In short, Gruden was impressed with Robertson during their visit on Gruden’s QB Class:

“(Robertson) is the product of the air raid offense,” Gruden said.

“The fundamentals in that offense (are) a lot different than the style of offense he’s going to get into. But he’s an explosive athlete, and he has a quick, accurate arm. He’s really good at taking the classroom to the field. I think he’s perfect for a football team.”

Roberton’s Background

Before transferring to Baylor, though, Robertson endured a tough end to his career at Mississippi State in Leach’s offense.

In December 2022, Leach was missing from practice ahead of the team’s bowl game vs. Illinois. Leach died that month due to what Mississippi State listed as “complications due to a heart condition.”

Opting for the portal, Robertson said he was recruited by Baylor and TCU over his hometown Texas Tech Red Raiders. Ultimately, the Bears won out.

Robertson ended his college career as one of the most prolific passers in Baylor history with 3,681 yards and 31 touchdowns in his senior season alone. The 60.3% passer finished as a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, was named Second Team All-Big 12, and participated in the Senior Bowl.

It’s back-to-back 3,000-plus-yard seasons for Robertson entering the draft, and, despite missing a bowl game by a single win, Dave Aranda and the Bears will certainly miss Sawyer’s presence next fall. Baylor went out and won Florida transfer DJ Lagway in the portal in hopes of replacing those numbers.

Robertson’s Draft Projection

Robertson isn’t likely to hear his name called on the first or perhaps even the second day of the draft. He’s got a talented arm, but concerns over erratic production – including 12 interceptions in 2025 – make him somewhat of a dicey roll for an NFL team looking to develop a quarterback.

Still, Robertson is listed inside ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.’s top 10 quarterbacks and could easily finish above his Day 3 projection should he get the right call.
