No. 23 Kentucky continued its impressive start to the season, securing an 8-2 win over Morehead State on Wednesday at Kentucky Proud Park. The Wildcats (6-1) used a six-run first inning to take control early and relied on a strong performance from a quartet of pitchers, all hailing from the Commonwealth, to seal their fifth consecutive victory.
The game, originally scheduled for Feb. 18, was postponed due to inclement weather. However, it proved worth the wait, as Kentucky delivered a dominant performance in all aspects.

For the second consecutive game, the Wildcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Kentucky tallied six runs in the opening frame, making it 13 total first-inning runs across their last two contests. The Morehead State starter failed to record an out, surrendering six earned runs before being pulled.
Leading the offensive charge, freshman infielder Tyler Bell continued his hot streak, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a double. Bell has now recorded four consecutive multi-hit games and leads the team in that category, including a team-best four doubles.
Senior outfielder Shaun Montoya also had a strong night, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and a hit-by-pitch. His contributions helped Kentucky maintain an offensive output that has seen them score 53 total runs over the past four games (13.3 per game).
Freshman left-hander Leighton Harris, making his collegiate debut, was sensational on the mound. The Lexington native delivered four scoreless innings, striking out four and earning the win in his first appearance. Harris, who grew up attending Kentucky sporting events, made an immediate impact, keeping the Eagles' offense at bay.
He was followed by fellow freshmen Zak Spurrier (Elizabethtown) and Logan Grubb (Lawrenceburg), who combined for five strikeouts over the final two innings. Grubb, in particular, was electric, striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.
Altogether, Kentucky’s pitching staff tossed 7.1 scoreless innings, proving instrumental in keeping Morehead State from mounting a comeback.
Head coach Nick Mingione, now in his ninth season, continues to etch his name in the program’s history books. The victory over Morehead State marked his 268th career win, making him the second-winningest coach in school history. Under his leadership, Kentucky boasts a 92-38 record since the start of the 2023 season and remains dominant in nonconference play, holding a 157-46 overall record and a 137-20 mark against non-Power Five opponents.
Additionally, the Wildcats have been particularly strong in February, going 52-18 during the month under Mingione. The win also improved his record against Morehead State to a perfect 6-0.
