The University of Kentucky baseball team returned to Lexington on Tuesday for their first home game since their historic run to the College World Series last season. The stakes may not have been as high as their super-regional sweep of Oregon State, but the Wildcats still delivered a dominant performance, crushing Evansville 24-3 in front of a packed home crowd.

A Historic Offensive Explosion

Kentucky’s offense wasted no time asserting its dominance, erupting for seven runs in the first inning. By the fifth inning, the Wildcats had built a commanding 15-1 lead before adding another six runs in the sixth. The final score of 24-3 marked a historic night for the program, as it was the highest run total at Kentucky Proud Park and the most runs in a game for the Wildcats since 2014. It also set a new benchmark for teams under head coach Nick Mingione.

Standout Performances at the Plate

The Wildcats’ offensive barrage was led by senior catcher Devin Burkes, who went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, five runs scored, and three doubles. Burkes’ performance tied a program record for most doubles in a game during the Mingione era and moved him into 38th place on Kentucky’s all-time career hits list.

Senior outfielder Cole Hage also made his presence felt, going 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI, and his second home run of the season. Meanwhile, senior Dylan Koontz launched his first home run in a Kentucky uniform and drove in three runs, contributing to the team’s offensive fireworks.

Pitching Shines in Home Debuts

On the mound, freshman right-hander Nate Harris made his collegiate debut and earned the win, allowing just two runs over four innings. He was backed by strong relief performances from right-handers Tristan Hunter and Tommy Skelding, who each pitched a scoreless inning in their Kentucky debuts.

Key Stats from the Blowout Victory

  • Kentucky improved to 5-1 on the season, outscoring opponents 59-12.
  • The 24-run explosion was the sixth-most in school history and the highest in the seven-year history of Kentucky Proud Park.
  • Head coach Nick Mingione notched his 267th career win, making him the
  • second-winningest coach in program history.
  • The Wildcats tallied six stolen bases, with contributions from 11 different players who recorded a hit and 12 players who crossed home plate.

What’s Next for the Wildcats?

Kentucky won’t have to wait long for their next challenge, as they return to action Wednesday afternoon against Morehead State. The game is set for 4 p.m. ET at Kentucky Proud Park and will be streamed on SECN+ while also being broadcast on the UK Sports Network.

With their offense firing on all cylinders and a deep pitching staff, the Wildcats are poised for another strong season as they build off last year’s historic College World Series appearance.
