Louisville Women’s Basketball: Postgame Notes vs. Kentucky

Louisville extended their winning streak against Kentucky to seven games on Sunday afternoon, marking the longest winning streak for the Cardinals in the history of the rivalry. Head coach Jeff Walz continues to have success in the month of December, as Louisville now boasts a 95-15 record in December games under his leadership.

In fact, over the past six seasons, the Cardinals have only lost two games in December and have won their last eight games in the month dating back to last season. Against nonconference opponents, Louisville has an impressive record of 183-34 in regular season play under Walz. Their dominance extends further, as they have an 85-11 record in non-conference play over the past eight years.

Since the start of the 2017-18 season, Louisville has amassed 186 wins, ranking fourth in the NCAA during that span. Moreover, the team’s winning percentage of .849 ranks fifth in the NCAA. The Cardinals have also been dominant against unranked opponents, winning 192 of their last 202 games against unranked teams.

The Cardinals’ defense was a key factor in their victory over Kentucky, as they forced 19 turnovers. This marks the eighth consecutive game in which Louisville has forced 19 or more turnovers. In fact, they have accomplished this feat in nine of their 10 games this season.

Louisville’s offensive firepower was on full display once again, with five players scoring in double figures. This is the second consecutive game in which they achieved this feat and the third time this season. In addition to their offensive success, the Cardinals outrebounded Kentucky 45-23, further asserting their dominance on the court.

Senior Olivia Cochran reached a significant milestone in her career, surpassing the 1,000-point mark with her 10 points against Kentucky. She becomes the 33rd player in program history to achieve this feat. Cochran also contributed eight rebounds, three assists, one steal, and zero turnovers.

Eylia Love led the Cardinals’ scoring efforts with 14 points, along with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Kiki Jefferson scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game, contributing 11 points and seven rebounds. Nyla Harris tallied 13 points and led the team in rebounds with eight, while also adding three steals. Sydney Taylor rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points, including three three-pointers.

Overall, the Louisville Cardinals showcased their strength and depth in their victory over Kentucky, continuing their dominant run in the rivalry and making a statement early in the season.
