The LSU Tigers traveled to Auburn, Alabama for a three-game series against the Auburn Tigers, which began on Friday night.
The Tigers, who entered the game 31-3 on the season, did not have their best performance. They plated just three runs and Kade Anderson looked a bit tired after his 135-pitch outing last weekend, allowing five runs in the 8-4 loss.
Here's how it happened:
Auburn got the scoring started in the second inning with two runs, which both came on an RBI double which got over the head of Chris Stanfield and Derek Curiel in left center field.
With the weather worsening, neither team was able to get on the board in the third or fourth, but Kade Anderson got in some trouble in the fifth. After striking out the first batter, Anderson gave up a couple singles and Tanner Reaves made an error at third base to load the bases with one out. He was able to work a full count on the next batter, but Ike Irish drove the pay off pitch to center field and Chris Stanfield couldn't bring it down at the wall and Irish cleared the bases with a triple, giving Auburn a 5-0 lead. Jay Johnson then took Kade Anderson out of the game in favor of freshman lefty, Cooper Williams, who gave up a RBI single before getting out of the inning.
After Auburn plated another in the sixth, LSU finally got in the fight in the seventh inning after Sam Dutton (who spent three seasons at LSU before transferring to Auburn this offseason) was pulled from the game. Steven Milam struck out to start the inning, but Luis Hernandez was hit by a pitch and John Pearson and Chris Stanfield drew a pair of walks to load the bases. Derek Curiel then plated a run on a groundout and Jared Jones doubled to score the second and third runs of the game for the Tigers. Unfortunately, Auburn got a run right back in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-3 lead into the eighth.
The Tigers mounted a last second effort in the ninth, scoring a run and putting a man on second, but they fell short as Auburn took game one, 8-4. LSU now drops to 31-4 and will need wins on Saturday and Sunday to take the series from Auburn.
