Once projected to become the face of the Oklahoma Sooners' future, four-star quarterback Peyton Houston opted for a more familiar backdrop to play college football.

On Monday, LSU launched its 2027 recruiting class with a major commitment from four-star quarterback Peyton Houston of Evangel Christian in Cotton Valley, Louisiana. The highly sought-after in-state talent picked the Tigers over strong competition from programs like Oklahoma, USC, and several others. Houston is rated as the No. 8 quarterback and No. 94 overall prospect in the Rivals Industry rankings.

Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 202 pounds, Houston caught the eye of LSU’s offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, who spearheaded his recruitment. Houston visited Baton Rouge over the weekend to witness the Tigers’ dominant win against Florida, further solidifying his connection to the program.

In his junior season, Houston has already showcased his precision, completing 68 percent of his passes for 664 yards and five touchdowns in just two games. He’s also contributed two rushing touchdowns, proving his dual-threat capability.

“My visit was amazing and it was an all-day event,” Houston said. “I got to tour every part of the campus with Coach (Trey) Holtz and Coach PK (Patrick Kelly). I also had the chance to talk with all the people I would interact with on a daily basis.

Houston’s sophomore year was nothing short of spectacular, amassing 5,170 total yards and 45 touchdowns. His standout performance included a remarkable NFHS record of 817 passing yards in a single game, along with a season total of 4,480 passing yards. These feats earned him First Team All-District, First Team All-Prep, and First Team LSWA All-State honors.

LSU extended an offer to Houston a year ago and intensified their pursuit in 2025. A pivotal February visit gave him a clear vision of his potential role as a quarterback in Baton Rouge, paving the way for his commitment to the Tigers.

“After the first meeting, we had lunch at Chimes, which was outstanding. Once we got back, I used the VR to see how it helps with reads and processing the game. I then spoke with Doctor (DF) Arnold about how they develop players off the field. I also talked to Coach (Brian) Kelly about how the day went. To end the day, I met with Coach (Joe) Sloan and saw how I would fit into the offense, how he teaches his quarterbacks, and his standards for quarterbacks both on and off the field.”
