Angry New York Giants fans booed the offense and chanted for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart as QB1 Russell Wilson left much to be desired with his play during the club's 22-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
Shortly after Big Blue fell to 0-3 on the season, Wilson addressed what he heard from paying customers at MetLife Stadium.
"There are highs and lows and always tough moments," Wilson said during his postgame comments, per the Giants' website. "You know, you got to have thick skin, you know what I mean? You got to be able to know who you are, the player that you are, know what you're capable of. Obviously, I've been able to show that throughout my career, and obviously last week and everything else, too, what we're capable of as an offense. I think they made a couple more plays than us today. ...We needed one or two big plays. Unfortunately didn't come our way."
Some called for Wilson to be benched after he completed 17-of-37 passes for 168 yards with no touchdowns in New York's 21-6 Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders. However, he then passed for 450 yards and three scores in the club's Week 2 overtime defeat at the Dallas Cowboys.
More recently, Wilson went 18-of-32 for 160 yards with no scores and two interceptions versus the Chiefs. In the fourth quarter of the contest, he ended an awful red-zone trip by oddly throwing the ball out of the back of the end zone on fourth down.
Following the loss to the Chiefs, Giants head coach Brian Daboll declined to guarantee that Wilson will start the Week 4 matchup versus the 3-0 Los Angeles Chargers. That said, Daboll also gave no indication that he was considering handing the keys of the offense over to Dart.
"I'm confident in us, confident myself, confident in the guys we have; confident in the players that we have and the coaching staff, just all that," Wilson added. "I think a big part of it is just, it was a tough game. It was a battle back and forth. You know, they made a couple more plays than we did."
As of Monday morning, ESPN BET had the Giants as 5.5-point home underdogs against the Chargers. In short, it seems like those who predicted during the summer that Dart would be New York's full-time starter for the Week 5 game against the New Orleans Saints (0-3) may be able to enjoy some victory laps before the first Sunday afternoon of October arrives.
