Maple Leafs react to Blue Jays advancing to ALCS with Game 4 win vs. Yankees

The Toronto Maple Leafs‘ opening night win over the Montreal Canadiens was overshadowed by the Toronto Blue Jays squaring off against the New York Yankees.

Throughout the night, the scoreboard at Scotiabank Arena provided updates on the playoff game taking place in the Bronx and even showed game footage during the intermission. At one point during the third period, the arena erupted as the Blue Jays extended their lead, prompting fans to chant “Let’s Go Blue Jays.”

Defenceman Morgan Rielly is accustomed to moments where Leafs fans were more enthusiastic about the baseball team, but was happy that this time was under better circumstances.

“ I like that. It’s not the first time I’ve heard them, but I heard them early in my career in a negative way,” he joked to reporters after the game. “ 2015, 2016, whatever that was. So it’s cool. We got the game on now, so we’ve got the boys all watching.”

Not only did the team stick around to catch the end of Game 4, but so too did several Leafs fans who got to watch the conclusion of the series on the jumbotron. When the Blue Jays secured the victory and punched their ticket to the ALCS, the fans were once again loud while the goal horn went off in celebration.

Goalie Anthony Stolarz may not be a Jays fan because he grew up cheering for the New York Mets, but he was happy to see that the Yankees’ season was coming to an end.

“ Kind of happy to look up and see those scores. So, good for the Jays,” he said. “It’s exciting. You can feel the energy and the passion, I think that’s something that a lot of guys have touched on. The city is extremely passionate, and just to hear the roar and just to see how much they support their teams, that’s just more motivation for us to continue to progress as this year goes on and make a deep run.”

The bunch of players on the Leafs were able to catch Game 2, where they could be seen buzzing while the Blue Jays took a commanding 2-0 series lead. Rielly said that it was a cool energy to be at Rogers Centre to cheer on them on and noted the crossover between the two fanbases, which makes the city a great place to be when either one of the teams is doing well.

Forward Bobby McMann isn’t a huge baseball fan, but keeps an eye on them when he can and said it was awesome to see what they are achieving.

“That’s sweet,” he said, “We’re able to make it to the game here. So we feel that energy, and it’s nice they’re getting it done on the road there and doing it nice.”

The Blue Jays await the results of Game 5 of the other ALDS between the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners, which will determine who they square off against in the ALCS that begins on Sunday. And the city of Toronto will be keeping a close eye on how things unfold for as long as the playoff run goes, meaning the Leafs will be playing second fiddle for the next little while.

That also may mean more instances where fans can keep track of the Blue Jays while at subsequent home games for the Leafs.

“I get it. I mean, everybody’s excited and the Jays are doing well and everything,” head coach Craig Berube said. “It’s all fine. I mean, it’s just a little different. But it’s good, we’re all into it.”
