More Than 10,000 Players are in the Transfer Portal

The numbers are out, and they paint a pretty brutal picture for college football’s transfer portal reality. A total of 10,965 NCAA football players entered the portal across all levels, and while plenty have found new homes, the majority are still stuck in limbo.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 3,972 players from FBS
  • 2,771 from FCS
  • 4,222 from Division II and III

Out of that total, 6,671 players are still active in the portal, which means they’ve either struck out so far or are still waiting for a better offer to come through. That includes:

  • 1,619 FBS players
  • 1,782 FCS players
  • 3,270 D2/D3 players

Put another way, 40% of FBS guys who hit the portal are still looking. For FCS, it’s 64%, and for D2 and D3? A wild 77% of players are still unsigned. That’s not just a traffic jam, it’s a full-on reality check for everyone thinking the portal is some automatic ticket to greener pastures.

It’s one thing to chase more playing time or look for a better fit. That’s understandable, but this shows what happens when thousands of guys hit the portal all at once without a clear plan. The math doesn’t work. There are only so many scholarships, only so many spots, and once rosters start filling up, even talented players can get left out.

This isn’t a knock on the players, either. The system encourages movement and makes it seem like every transfer is going to be a success story. But this is the flip side: nearly 7,000 players who don’t have a home with spring ball right around the corner. Some of them will land somewhere eventually, sure, but plenty won’t. And for every kid banking on one more shot, this has become a cautionary tale.

The portal isn’t going anywhere. It’s part of the new normal, but these numbers should be a wake-up call for players, coaches, and fans. Everyone loves the highlight commitments and the big flips, but behind those headlines are thousands of kids still waiting on a call that might never come.
