Defending champions Liverpool visit Newcastle at St James’ Park on Monday, 25 August 2025 at 8:00 pm BST (9:00 pm CEST, 3:00 pm ET, 12:00 pm PT) with Eddie Howe insisting he wants an “electric” atmosphere under the Tyneside lights.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe told the press conference that Alexander Isak is out and “won’t be available again” which is a big blow for the Magpies given his role in the team. On the plus side, Joe Willock is back in training and Jacob Ramsey is available for selection.
Liverpool will be without Jeremie Frimpong who is out with a hamstring injury until after the international break. Conor Bradley is back in training and might be considered for selection, while Ryan Gravenberch is back after serving a ban on the opening day.
Liverpool started their title defence with a 4–2 win over Bournemouth with late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah, and with Hugo Ekitike scoring on his league debut.

Newcastle will probably go 4–3–3: Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schär, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall, Bruno Guimarães, Willock. Sean Longstaff, Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes.
Liverpool should stick with Arne Slot’s 4–2–3–1: Alisson, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konaté, Virgil van Dijk and either Milos Kerkez or Andy Robertson, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo, Hugo Ekitike.
The teams met three times last season. Liverpool won 2–0 at Anfield in February 2025 and the December 2024 match ended 3–3. Between those games, Newcastle won 2–1 in the 2025 EFL Cup Final at Wembley which was Howe’s first major trophy in charge.
Historically, Liverpool have dominated this fixture winning 94 of 190 games, Newcastle 51 and 45 drawn. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 17 league meetings with Newcastle but the Magpies’ EFL Cup win shows they can rise to the occasion.

This confrontation always delivers and St James’ Park will give Newcastle a lift, especially in set pieces and pressing. But Liverpool’s attacking depth with Salah, Gakpo, Wirtz, Chiesa and Ekitike is hard to stop.
Opta’s prediction percentage of Liverpool winning is 45.5%. A narrow away win seems most likely: Newcastle 1–2 Liverpool.
