“I’m back,” wrote Nigel Owens on his official X account, ahead of returning to the pitch for the first time in four years.

The iconic referee took charge of a celebratory match between Lampeter Town RFC and London Welsh in west Wales, marking Lampeter’s 150th anniversary.

London Welsh triumphed 60–24, but the main attraction was Owens, making his first appearance since refereeing his 100th Test—France versus Italy—in autumn 2020.

“It was a bit of a Barbarians game, really, wasn’t it! It was very, very enjoyable,” Owens said during a post-match conference in west Wales.

“A great crowd here as well, and the atmosphere. I enjoyed it. I was quite pleased with myself that I lasted the 80 minutes, actually!”
Owens also reflected on his history with the club, telling reporters at a post-match press conference.

“I actually refereed a game here when they opened the new clubhouse 10 years ago. I was always hoping to carry on refereeing the community game, but I’ve been so busy over the last four years, between everything, I haven’t had time, to be honest. I may start back next year.”

The Welshman confirmed his return match in a post on his official X account before kickoff, writing, “After 4 years, I am picking up the whistle again tomorrow for a special 150-year anniversary celebrating Lampeter RFC in their match versus London Welsh. Hope the legs will last the 80 minutes.”

Though no formal return to regular officiating has been announced, Owens hinted he may re-enter the game in 2026.

Away from rugby, he devotes time to his farm in the Gwendraeth Valley, where he raises Hereford cattle. In a WalesOnline column last year, Owens described farming as his lifelong dream, one supported by his rugby career.

His presence on the pitch remains as strong as ever. Whether temporary or permanent, his return was met with enthusiasm from fans and players alike.
