The crew of "College GameDay," the ESPN pregame show for the slate of NCAA football each week, was once again in SEC country on Saturday, in anticipation of the rematch between Georgia and Texas scheduled for Saturday evening.
But one member of the crew was notably absent: Lee Corso, the former coach and longtime star of the show for its four-decade run, the guy who helped make "GameDay" what it is today. Corso is 89 now and has had several health setbacks in recent years. He missed two editions of "GameDay" earlier in the season.
Just after the intro to the show, host Rece Davis chimed in with an update on Corso and his absence.
"By the way, our good friend Lee Corso had a minor procedure this week, he's doing great. We look forward to getting Lee back in the postseason, we know he's watching right now, he'll be with us," Davis said.
Corso suffered a stroke in 2009 which left him with partial paralysis, and has struggled with speech since, but remains a favorite on the "GameDay" crew.
While he has missed several editions of "GameDay" for health reasons over the years, Corso has held fast to the notion that he won't retire. "I'm gonna be like that guy in Vaudeville," Corso once told GQ. "They hook him around the neck, and they pull him off the stage as he keeps talking."
