Neymar continues to play for Santos FC in order to earn a call-up for the Brazilian national team World Cup roster this summer.
Yesterday, Neymar and Santos lost 2-3 to Fluminense in the Brasileirão. The result keeps Santos in 15th with 13 points and only one point above the relegation zone after 12 league matches played.
Neymar played the full match but did not score or provide an assist, and after the match, videos of Santos fans booing Neymar surfaced online.
This is not the first game where Neymar is booed by Santos fans, and the player addressed the boos online. Neymar wrote, "We've reached the day where I'm forced to explain the ear-rubbing gesture! Guys, honestly, you're exaggerating way too much, and you've crossed the line... It's so sad that I have to put up with this! No person can tolerate that."
Santos assistant coach Cuquinha reacted to the gestures from the home fans towards Neymar and gave his thoughts on the situation.
After the 3-2 loss to Fluminense, Santos FC assistant coach Cuquinha was asked about Neymar facing boos by home fans as he walked off the pitch last night.
Cuquinha states the fans have every right to express their thoughts towards players like Neymar and the rest of the team, who have not started well this season.
The Santos coach said, "In today’s case, we came close to victory, we couldn’t hold on, and that’s our fault — the players, the staff, all of us. We have to thank the fans; they put on a beautiful show. In the end, they complained, did what they did, and they had every right to."
Cuquinha talked about Neymar's performance, who was not able to make a goal contribution. Neymar has three goals and two assists after six league matches so far this year and insists there is no lack of confidence from the player.
Cuquinha said, "I don’t see any lack of confidence from Neymar. Sometimes he misses, sometimes he gets it right. But he’s the team’s star, the guy who makes the difference. If the ball has to fall to one person’s feet, let it be his."
