A few months ago, students from Bullard High School filled out a shoe-size survey form without knowing what it was for. The surprise was about to solve an issue that the school had been struggling with all year. And at the center of everything was none other than Shaquille O’Neal.

On the morning of May 27, 2026, school officials distributed more than 2,400 pairs of brand-new sneakers to students, with each getting a pair. The donation by Shaquille O’Neal addressed the organization’s footwear shortage for physical education.

As reported by ABC30, principal Armen Torigian confirmed the surprise during the morning distribution. The principal stated that the school was giving out about 2,400 pairs of shoes donated by the basketball legend.

Many students lacked the proper footwear required to participate safely in daily PE classes. Jonathan Clark, a PE teacher at the school, expressed relief and excitement over the donation. Clark noted how excited he felt as an educator to see his students have proper shoes they can wear to class.

Outside of his teaching duties, Clark is a professional dunker known as the “high-flying teacher.” Over nearly ten years, O’Neal watched Clark progress from a local substitute teacher to a dedicated full-time educator while competing in celebrity games and dunk contests.

The turning point for the donation occurred during a dunk tournament in 2025. Clark’s students at Bullard High School recorded a supportive good-luck video and sent it to him. O’Neal saw the clip, became impressed by the kids’ kindness, and decided on the spot to reward them.

At the end of the contest, O’Neal told Clark that he wanted to do something nice and would give his students shoes.

For those familiar with O’Neal’s life away from the basketball court, the Bullard surprise far from being the only act of magnanimity.

Shaquille O’Neal’s History of Giving Back to the Community

The sneaker delivery is a small part of the long-term mission for The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation. The organization focuses on making ways for youth to help them achieve their full potential.

The program aims at Title I schools, distributing backpacks filled with essentials to students. These partnerships have donated millions of dollars in supplies to kids across the country.

Apart from school supplies, his Comebaq Courts program focuses on building basketball spaces for youth athletes. He also established Get Game Ready grants to fund high school programs.

O’Neal links his desire to give back to his upbringing and his parents’ lessons. He recalls his family handing out food to homeless people despite his stepfather making a modest salary of 30,000 dollars a year.
