Hwang Dong-hyuk's Squid Game, one of Netflix's most popular shows of all-time with Season 1 being the streaming service's most-watched series ever, there's obviously great anticipation for the forthcoming Season 3, which will serve as the series finale.
With Season 2 of the hit show currently sitting as Netflix's third most-watched series ever, it's a safe bet that the third and final installment of Squid Game will put up monster viewership numbers, perhaps with a chance to surpass them both.
Given the staggering success of the show and its many complex characters, it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that Dong-hyuk has been giving some thought to possible spin-off ideas for the series.

"I'm thinking more along the lines of a spinoff," Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said. "One of the ideas I'm tossing around is what happened between season 1 and 2. There's a three-year gap. So, for example, what was the Front Man doing during those three years? What was the Recruiter doing? When I have some downtime, I like to just toss some ideas around and go wild with my imagination. So I guess we can be open to anything."
Since the final episode of Season 2 ended with a jarring cliffhanger, there will be a number of holes to fill in wrapping up the story for the final season.
But based on Dong-hyuk's quote, especially the specific reference to the three-year story gap between Seasons 1 and 2, it sounds like there would still be plenty of meat on the table to work with for a spin-off rather than something forced in the name of keeping the Squid Game brand alive.
However, considering that it reportedly took Dong-hyuk 10 years to create the first season of Squid Game, one would presume that if any kind of spin-off series were to be set in motion it would likely only be happening if he truly felt there was a story worth telling.
The third and final six-episode season of Squid Game is scheduled to release on June 27, with Netflix keeping its traditional theme of dropping all episodes at once.
