Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello likely had a flashback to the 2022 Knoxville Super Regional on Monday night during UT's win against Wake Forest.

The Vols beat Wake Forest 11-5 on Monday to win the Knoxville Regional and advance to the program's fifth straight Super Regional (Tennessee will face Arkansas in the Fayetteville Super Regional).

In the bottom of the 8th inning, with Tennessee leading Wake Forest 10-5, Vols catcher Cannon Peebles was ejected after striking out and making a comment to the Demon Deacons' catcher.

Peebles will miss game one against Arkansas in the Super Regional as a result of the ejection.

"The (Wake Forest) catcher celebrated the strikeout, as he should," said Vitello after the game when asked about Peebles' ejection. "We’re in a regional. Cannon said something back to him, as he should not. But probably what he said to the catcher is something both dugouts said back and forth to one another the whole night long.

"I don’t know if it had to do something with a warning being out there or not. I’ve sat in here -- the Notre Dame game (in 2022) for one which is relevant, I’ve sat in here (after an ejection). I’d like to think these kids would say I’ve got their back as much as any coach they’ve been around. But it was foolish. First of all, take your walk because the ball wasn’t close to being a strike. And then have some composure -- especially in that situation playing the scoreboard."

In 2022, Vols outfielder Drew Gilbert was ejected in game one of the Knoxville Super Regional after arguing a very questionable strike call. Gilbert was suspended for game two against Notre Dame.

Tennessee won game two without Gilbert, but the Vols ended up losing the series after falling to the Irish in game three.

Starting the Fayetteville Super Regional without Peebles is a tough blow for Tennessee, but the Vols are fortunate to have a player like Stone Lawless who will be ready to step up in game one with Peebles sidelined.
