Everyone has debated how an NFL team will utilize Travis Hunter. Whoever drafts the two-way star may want to honor his strong preference.
The Heisman Trophy winner will likely go No. 2 or 3 in next week's NFL Draft after dominating as a wide receiver and cornerback on Colorado. As scouts and pundits argue over which discipline he should prioritize as a professional, Hunter made it clear he wants to keep playing both sides.
According to CBS Sports' Garrett Podell, Hunter said he's informed NFL teams he wants to play receiver and cornerback in the NFL. No club Hunter met with rebuked that request, but the 21-year-old claimed he'd walk away if a team only let him play one spot.
"It's never playing football again," Hunter told Podell. "Because I've been doing it my whole life, and I love being on the football field. I feel like I could dominate on each side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it."
Hunter registered 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense while tallying four interceptions on defense. Playing wide receiver would be more financially viable, but Pro Football Focus said he has an "All-Pro ceiling" as a defensive back.
"I just feel very confident in myself," Hunter said. "And I got a competitive spirit that I can do whatever I put my mind to, and I feel like I can do it."
Assuming the Tennessee Titans select Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick, the Cleveland Browns could snag Hunter with the following selection. Browns general manager Andrew Berry discussed how the team views the special prospect during February's NFL Scouting Combine.
"In terms of Travis Hunter, cornerback or receiver, the answer is 'yes.' He can play both, and I think that's what makes him special," Berry said. "But we would see him as a receiver primarily first. But I think what makes him a bit of a unicorn is that he can do both at a high level."
Asked about Berry's comments, Hunter said he'd keep conversations with the organization private.
"It's not up to me," Hunter said. "When they call my name, if they call my name, then we'll figure that out, but it's not up to me. That's what they think about me right now."
