Tragedy has struck a university in Wisconsin this week as two students were found dead in a dorm this past Monday night.
According to WMTV/Gray News, 22-year-old Kelsie Martin and 22-year-old Hallie Helms of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville were found dead after officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at the Wilgus Hall residence hall. Per the report, the call came in at around 4 p.m. local time when a "situation" was reported.
Officials have been silent on what happened but have referred to it as "an isolated incident." Students were asked to shelter in place for around an hour but UW-Platteville Police Chief Joe Hallman made it clear that there was not an active or ongoing threat.
A student who was interviewed said he saw two girls running out of the building at around that time and then saw law enforcement. But he could not identify what happened.
In a press conference, UW-Platteville Chancellor Tammy Evetovich said that the university’s priority right for the time being would be the safety and well-being of students.
“We are focused on you,” Evetovich said. “We understand that you have a lot of questions. And we will answer what we can, but we want to focus on our students that are impacted and support them in ways that only people on campus can do.”
In a separate statement, the Platteville School District offered its own condolences and support for those who were affected by the tragedy.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred on the University of Wisconsin–Platteville campus. Our thoughts are with all those affected, and we stand in support of our neighbors, friends, and families connected to the university community," the organization said.
"As a school district, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. While this incident did not occur on our campuses, we recognize the strong ties many of our students, staff, and families have with UW–Platteville. During times like this, we must come together to support one another."
"We want to reassure you that we will be in close contact with local law enforcement and community partners, and there is no known threat to our schools at this time. Our schools will remain open with normal operations, and we are taking all appropriate measures to ensure a safe learning environment."
"Counseling and support services will be available in our schools for any students or staff who may be impacted. We encourage anyone in need to reach out to school counselors or administrators—we are here for you."
"We are grateful for the strength and resilience of our community. Please continue to care for one another, and don’t hesitate to contact your school office if you have any questions or concerns."
Final exams have been canceled through the end of the week. The university held its commencement ceremony this past weekend.
