Day 2 of the US Open will see 24 women’s first-round matches. Who will advance to Round 2 and who will be sent home early? As always, our writer share their thoughts on all of the matches. We split the 24 matches between six articles. The other articles feature Venus Williams vs Karolina Muchova, Madison Keys vs Renata Zarazua, Elina Svitolina vs Anna Bondar, Petra Kvitova vs Diane Parry, and Victoria Mboko vs Barbora Krejcikova. Predicting these matches are Yesh Ginsburg, Damian Kust, and Jordan Reynolds. Who do you think will advance?
Yesh:
Frech is the better player. Even though she’s had a very rough year by her standards, few of her losses were particularly embarrassing. I think the Pole should be able to get through this one.
Prediction: Frech in 3
Damian:
The 10-21 win-loss record for Frech this season makes you wonder how she’s still No. 30 in the world, but of course the Pole has a WTA 500 title to defend soon in Guadalajara. It would be helpful to get anything going before then and Gibson seems like an opponent who’s still lacking experience, making her a bit more vulnerable to the Pole’s tricky slices.
Prediction: Frech in 3
Jordan:
Gibson always produces some flashes of brilliance in her matches. That contrasts with Frech’s style of playing consistently and within herself. I trust the Pole more to stay the course better and win.
Prediction: Frech in 3
Yesh:
When Taylor Townsend is playing well, she’s a handful for anyone on Tour. Her unique game can especially befuddle inexperienced opponents. I expect the American to breeze through this one.
Prediction: Townsend in 2
Damian:
She’s outside the Top 100 but everybody’s well aware of the danger that Townsend can also produce in singles, especially after big runs in the North American swing so far. It’s not like Ruzic can’t be a tough out herself after the performances in Monterrey. But Townsend offers a style that’s quite unique on the WTA Tour and makes her even more difficult to handle.
Prediction: Townsend in 2
Jordan:
Ruzic has had some good results in recent weeks, including wins against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Anastasia Potapova. Townsend’s playing style makes her an awkward opponent to face. But I still favor Ruzic to win with her recent consistent level.
Prediction: Ruzic in 2
Yesh:
I’m looking forward to big things from Clervia Ngounoue. But those big things are in the future, and Kalinskaya is too good right now to lose this one.
Prediction: Kalinskaya in 2
Damian:
Ngounoue had a tremendous junior career and could still be a nice prospect for the future. But Kalinskaya is right here, right now and probably offers a bit too much quality at the moment. Especially after a strong North American hard court swing that included nine wins across three events and the Washington final.
Prediction: Kalinskaya in 2
Jordan:
I do not expect Kalinskaya to have many issues here. Although she struggles to reach the latter stages of big events, opening rounds like this are ones she usually handles. Ngounoue is talented, but not at her level.
Prediction: Kalinskaya in 2
Yesh:
Andreeva is absolutely the better player. She’s a prodigious talent approaching the top of her game. But Parks is playing inspired tennis right now. With a partisan home crowd, I think she can stun the Russian superstar.
Prediction: Parks in 3
Damian:
Andreeva has only played one match since Wimbledon, but reportedly the ankle injury should be fine by now. She’s an unreal talent and will get there eventually, even if she hasn’t looked like a soon to be Grand Slam champion in the last couple of months. Parks has all the weaponry in the world, but she’d need to play a perfect match here.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2
Jordan:
Parks enters this match after a very good run to the semifinal in Monterrey. Andreeva defuses power well at her best, and that is the key to beating the big-serving Parks. Expect the teenager to avoid an upset with her more complete game.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2
