Day 2 of the women’s singles at the US Open produced much exciting drama. The legendary Venus Williams’s return to the New York was one of the standout stories from Monday. Mirra Andreeva, Australian Open winner Madison Keys, and Elena Rybakina also took to the court. Which match stood out the most on an action-packed day at Flushing Meadows?

US Open Day 2 Women’s Recap

Who Looked Good

Venus Williams put up a valiant fight before falling to Karolina Muchova. The 45-year-old’s level at her age was remarkable, and she justified the decision to award her a wild card. Williams grew into the match after a slow first few games and won the second set comfortably, but she ran out of steam in the end. Muchova did very well to stay composed, triumphing 6-3 2-6 6-1.

Elena Rybakina ran out a comfortable 6-3 6-0 winner against Julieta Paraeja. The 2022 Wimbledon winner did not face a break point throughout the match and never faced any pressure. Her form improved before the US Open with three consecutive semifinals, and she looks much more at ease on the court than earlier in the year.

Caroline Garcia’s career ended with a 4-6 6-4 3-6 defeat to Kamilla Rakhimova. She avoided any fears about being thrashed at her final tournament by competing well for most of the contest against the more match-fit Rakhimova. Garcia reached the 2022 semifinals in New York, and her most significant career title came at that year’s WTA Finals. The Frenchwoman’s fortunes declined after that moment.

Barbora Krejcikova made an impressive start.  Recent National Bank Open winner Victoria Mboko looked like a challenging matchup on paper, but the Czech cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Although Mboko seemed in some discomfort during the match, Krejcikova’s level meant the Canadian probably would have found it difficult to compete regardless.

Who Looked Bad

Petra Kvitova’s career ended in the worst possible way. The two-time Wimbledon champion played at 11 a.m. on the Grandstand in front of a mostly empty stadium and was annihilated 1-6 0-6 by Diane Parry. It did not feel right for a WTA legend to bow out like that, and some fans will question how the match was scheduled.

Alycia Parks, who entered the US Open with some momentum after reaching the semifinal in Monterrey, crashed back to earth against Mirra Andreeva. Like Kvitova, she only managed to claim one game in a 0-6 1-6 drubbing. Parks’s serve, the most pivotal element of her game, misfired from start to finish.

The 14th seed, Elina Svitolina, crashed out on Day 2. She only converted one of nine break points in her 2-6 4-6 defeat to Anna Bondar, who served and hit big forehands on several crucial points. The 2019 semifinalist could not find the answers in important moments, and furiously smashed her racket after being eliminated from the final Grand Slam of 2025.

Match of the day

Anna Kalinskaya and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova’s three-set wins against Clervie Ngounoue and Dayana Yastremska were enjoyable watches. But Madison Keys and Renata Zarazua’s tussle is chosen as the best from Day 2 at the US Open. An opening set filled with twists and turns was eventually decided on a tiebreak. The 2017 runner-up at Flushing Meadows saved three set points to take it 12-10 and the first set 7-6.

Many undoubtedly expected Keys to settle into the match after an uneven performance in the opener. What followed was a second set containing even more momentum shifts. The American led 3-0, but then lost five consecutive games. Keys recovered to force another tiebreak before making untimely unforced errors to lose it 6-7, and confirm a decider.

After seven consecutive holds, Zarazua broke for a 5-3 lead. Keys delighted the home crowd by staging a comeback to level the set at 5-5. Unfortunately for the American fans, the more solid Mexican got her reward in the end. Zarazua won the final two games to prevail 6-7 7-6 7-5, and seal one of the best wins of her career.
