The National Weather Service has placed several regions across the southwestern and central United States on high alert as powerful gusts threaten to sweep through on Thursday afternoon. Officials report that residents in affected zones should prepare for sustained winds and sudden gusts that could disrupt everyday activities and travel throughout the day.

Forecasters indicate that wind speeds will likely range between 45 and 55 miles per hour in many locations, creating hazardous conditions for motorists and outdoor operations. These breezes are expected to arrive during the afternoon hours, prompting local authorities to urge caution among communities that frequently experience variable desert and high-plains weather patterns.

Driving could become particularly challenging under these circumstances, with reduced visibility and strong crosswinds posing risks to larger vehicles. Travelers are being encouraged to adjust their plans accordingly and remain vigilant for any rapid changes in road conditions as the system moves through.

Six states are currently under a high wind advisory due to the impending weather. The areas include California, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Texas. Each of these regions may see varying degrees of impact depending on local terrain and elevation.

“A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of between 30 and 40 mph are expected, or wind gusts of between 40 and 58 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. In addition, strong winds over desert areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to well under a mile at times in blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra caution,” the advisory said.

In many of the impacted desert and arid zones, blowing dust and sand could further complicate matters by limiting sight distances for drivers and potentially affecting air quality. Residents living in open or exposed locations are advised to secure loose objects around their properties to prevent damage from flying debris.

Communities are being reminded to take proactive steps as the winds strengthen. Preparation can make a significant difference in ensuring personal safety and minimizing property risks during periods of elevated weather activity.

As a reminder, here’s what to do when strong storms hit:

Stay Weather Ready: Continue to listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay updated about severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.

At Your House: Go to your secure location if you hear a severe thunderstorm warning. Damaging wind or large hail may be approaching. Take your pets with you if time allows.

At Your Workplace or School: Stay away from windows if you are in a severe thunderstorm warning and damaging wind or large hail is approaching. Do not go to large open rooms such as cafeterias, gymnasiums or auditoriums.

Outside: Go inside a sturdy building immediately if severe thunderstorms are approaching. Sheds and storage facilities are not safe. Taking shelter under a tree can be deadly. The tree may fall on you. Standing under a tree also put you at a greater risk of getting struck by lightning.

In a Vehicle: Being in a vehicle during severe thunderstorms is safer than being outside; however, drive to closest secure shelter if there is sufficient time.

Experts emphasize that even though the primary concern involves wind, associated threats like sudden dust storms or isolated thunderstorms could develop quickly. Staying informed through reliable channels remains one of the most effective ways to navigate the day safely.

With conditions expected to peak in the afternoon and potentially linger into the evening in some spots, officials are calling on the public to exercise heightened awareness. Simple actions such as checking weather updates regularly and avoiding unnecessary travel can help reduce overall exposure to these forceful winds.

As the day unfolds, all residents in the advisory zones are encouraged to prioritize safety and support one another in staying prepared. Monitoring local forecasts will allow individuals to respond promptly if warnings escalate beyond the current advisory level.
