Wease Making Strong Case for 53-man Roster Spot
Unlike other position rooms on the roster, it seems the Dolphins have a glut of quality wide receivers to choose from.
The top four players seem to be set in stone with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and Malik Washington as locks to make the team out of training camp.
With Miami likely to carry five, if not six, receivers, the battle for potentially the last two spots is heating up.
Second-year player Tahj Washington has an inside track on one of the spots, while it seems like a rookie is trying to grab the last spot.
That would be Theo Wease Jr.
Wease Jr. had a strong performance in the team’s week 2 pre-season win over the Lions with two touchdowns as he showed strong chemistry with Miami’s potential quarterback, a fellow rookie in Quinn Ewers.
The former Missouri Tiger, Wease Jr., was one of many high-quality undrafted free agent receivers, and he possesses something that the majority of the receiver room doesn’t.
Size.
Wease Jr. stands at 6’3, 200 pounds, which makes him an intriguing red-zone target for Tua Tagovailoa.
In years past, Miami has thrown fade routes to Hill and Waddle in the back of the end zone, and well, those throws are just not ideal.
Along with his performance last week, Wease Jr. has one more opportunity to prove himself in joint practices against the Jaguars and presumably will see a lot of action in the pre-season finale as Miami will sit Hill, Waddle, Malik Washington, and Westbrook-Ikhine.
Tahj Washington will also not play a ton, if at all.
That should allow for Wease Jr. to continue to produce and put up big numbers as his chemistry with Ewers continues to grow.
Of course, Wease Jr. could be squeezed off the 53-man roster depending on how the team allocates the size of each room.
Injuries also play a factor on if Wease Jr. will make it.
If he doesn’t, Miami would presumably give him a decent amount of money to come back on the practice squad and elevate him early in the season depending on what happens with Hill’s injury.
Either way, it seems like Wease Jr. has a future with the team.
That should be expected after a highly productive training camp and pre-season.
