ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) came out Tuesday, and one of the most intriguing things is how it ranks each team’s strength of schedule (SOS) ahead of the upcoming season.
The FPI’s top 10 teams in this category are all SEC teams. The SEC team that has the lowest SOS rank is Missouri, but they are listed at 20. This means the FPI is very high on the SEC’s level of competition during conference play.
Alabama’s SOS rank is 10th out of over 130 teams in the nation with nine fellow SEC teams in front of them.
Florida, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Georgia and Texas A&M are the nine teams with a higher SOS rank than Alabama, and the FPI ranks those teams from one to nine in that order.
The FPI has Alabama’s biggest rivals, Auburn and Tennessee, ranked 14th and 15th respectively.
