The Chicago Bears wrapped up Day 2 of the team’s picks by taking LSU Tigers wide receiver Zavion Thomas. With the departure of DJ Moore this offseason, this made sense as a fit for the team. He has the ability to fit multiple roles on the roster. Let’s take a closer look at who exactly Thomas is and what his role will be with the Bears.

It appears that NFL Analyst Lance Zierlein is happy with this selection based on his pre-draft scouting report. He had Thomas listed as a sixth-round prospect, but below is his overview regarding the newest member of the Bears:

“Thomas lacks gaudy production as a receiver, but his athleticism, versatility and return talent could bolster his roster value. He has average size with enough vertical speed to stress defenses downfield. He’s average in beating man coverage underneath and struggles finishing catches through contact. His vision, burst and elusiveness as a runner makes the evaluation more interesting. Thomas is likely to be viewed as a WR5 candidate with value as a return man, but teams could dig a little deeper on his potential as a running back.”

Thomas spent all four college football seasons in the Southeastern Conference, starting with the Mississippi State Bulldogs for two years and finishing the final two with the LSU Tigers. He is coming off a season where he finished with 41 receptions for 488 yards (11.9 yards per catch) with four receiving touchdowns. He has also been able to run the football with 19 rushes for 99 yards (5.2 yards per carry) with a rushing touchdown. Thomas has been a special return man as well, finishing his career with three touchdown returns (two kickoff, one punt) as well. Chicago fans are going to love that he is also a distant relative of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton.

Where does Thomas fit on the Chicago Bears roster?

In terms of the 2026 Bears roster, he is going to be competing for a roster spot as a third wide receiver. However, it is more likely that he will be a reserve wideout and compete with the likes of Jahdae Walker and JP Richardson. It is going to be intriguing as he could wind up being in a battle with Kalif Raymond for the third wide receiver spot. He is one of the fastest players in the draft class, finishing with a 4.28 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.  Thomas can be used in trick plays on offense while also being an elite returner. It will be intriguing to see how coach Ben Johnson wants to use him in his rookie season.
