A key 2026 class Wisconsin Badgers commitment has received a scholarship from a school that could potentially cause a flip.
Ryan Hopkins, a three-star quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class, committed to the Wisconsin program back in April. Hopkins is ranked as the 31st overall quarterback in the class as well as the 43rd recruit in the state of California. Since then, Hopkins has not heard nearly as much noise on the recruiting front and no programs have extended scholarship offers until now.
The UCLA Bruins have extended a scholarship to Hopkins, which both allows the recruit to potentially continue to play in the Big Ten Conference while staying close to home. Hopkins also holds an in-state offer from California but never grew quite close enough to the program to warrant potentially staying home. The exact value of the scholarship in the eyes of Hopkins is unknown but will be revealed in the coming months as some programs attempt to flip the recruit before signing day.
Hopkins established himself as one of the top rising recruits in the state of California last season and now a transfer to Mater Dei might bring more attention his way. UCLA has kept a close eye on Hopkins, with the school being just over an hour away from Mater Dei. The Bruins have now officially joined the recruitment of Hopkins, but the offer could be too little too late as the quarterback has held his commitment for months.
Since announcing his transfer, Hopkins has impressed both in summer camps and in scrimmages which has brought some new eyes around. UCLA is likely not the only staff that will opt to extend a scholarship to Hopkins as the season begins to progress.
For the Wisconsin Badgers, continuing to lock-down Hopkins is going to be key as the quarterback is a pivotal part of the future. Wisconsin already has Danny O’Neil and Carter Smith as pieces for the future, but as the offseason has shown, nobody can be written in stone as a returner until a return is official. With that being said, the Badgers need a quarterback in the 2026 class in order to fill the void and provide longterm depth.
On the field, Hopkins is an excellent fit within the new Jeff Grimes offense as dual threat quarterback combined a strong arm with a capable running game. Hopkins is also a track runner and possesses blazing speed, and arguably has a stronger running game than a passing game at the moment. This upcoming season is vital for Hopkins as the quarterback is set to make a major jump in competition, which will force the quarterback to sink or swim as far as his development as a passer goes.
