By this point, most outdoor-minded people (and a good number of folks not particularly outdoorsy) are at least vaguely familiar with the YETI brand. The nearly-ubiquitous bottles can be seen at trailheads, boat ramps, campsites, sports arenas, and more across the country. Most of us use the bottles and mugs for either cold drinks or coffee, but over the past year YETI has been making an investment in a new category: The specialty coffee realm.

Perfect for a Fly Fishing Camp

Meet the YETI French Press - It started with a launch of espresso cups over the winter, and now YETI has gone bigger with their new Rambler French Press. The coffeemaker comes in two sizes: the Rambler 34-oz. French Press, $110, which makes 2-4 cups of coffee, and the Rambler 64-oz. French Press, $130, which makes 6+ cups of coffee for either one overly-caffeinated individual or a group. Coated in YETI’s trademark bright colors, the French Press is definitely an investment piece at more than $100. It’s a splurge, sure, but a fun one.

The French Press is one of the easiest ways to make coffee at home or outdoors. In short, one dumps ground coffee into the pot and then tops it off with freshly-heated water. Let the concoction sit for a while (the longer, the stronger), then gently press down on the plunger built into the lid. The plunge motion presses the grounds to the bottom, leaving you with a cup of rich, dark coffee.

The Grounds Control Filter

In most traditional French Presses, it’s important to immediately remove the grounds from the bottom of the coffeemaker, which means pouring out all the coffee into some other vessel. YETI’s helped solve that problem with their new Grounds Control Filter, which stops the brewing process after plunging, blocking the grounds from over-extracting and therefore making the brewed coffee bitter.

Drink Your Coffee - Fly Fish the Morning - Come Back and Enjoy Another Cup

If you've spent any time in a fly fishing camp, you know it's best to have a pot of coffee always ready to go. The Yeti French Press has double wall insulation to keep your coffee hot. Combine this with the Grounds Control Filter and you can spend a couple of hours in a cold river, and then come back to camp for a hot cup of coffee, minus the bitterness.

Other Important Features

The French Press comes with a Twist-to-Lock Lid to help prevent unplanned dumping when pouring coffee into smaller cups. A ceramic interior makes the vessel easy to clean. The long handle is easy to hold, even while wearing thin gloves. Bonus: it’s all dishwasher safe, so once you’re back from the trip just chuck it in the dishwasher and get it ready for the next go.

Accessorize: YETI Espresso Cups and Mugs

This winter, YETI brought a new line of drinkware to market, focused on the craft coffee user who enjoys espresso beverages. If you’re not always reaching for 16 ounces of coffee but instead prefer espresso, or even a small macchiato, these are for you. And as a bonus, they look pretty cute on the shelf, and are stackable for easy transport or storage in camp.

Dry Fly or Nymphing | A Regular Cup of Joe or Espresso

Straight-up espresso lovers should look at the Rambler 4-oz. Stackable Cups, which run $30 for pack of two. These have no handles and will nicely hold a double-shot of espresso. The next-size up are the Rambler 6-oz. Stackable Mugs ($35 pack of two) which include handles and leave enough room for a splash of heated milk for the macchiato-makers. Two slightly-larger options in the series include the Rambler 8-oz. Stackable Cup With MagSlider Lid ($20) and the Rambler 10-oz. Stackable Mug With MagSlider Lid ($25). Each choice brings YETI’s characteristic strength, durability, and fun color options, regardless of your individual coffee preference.

A Fly Fishing Camp Is Made Better With Good Coffee

Yeti did this one right. They took the classic design of a French press that has proven itself over time and made it better. They improved the quality of material, improved the function, improved the idea. You can feel it when you hold it, and it becomes obvious in the use. And like most things YETI it's strong. This French press is built like a tool and should be used as such.

A Few Last Thoughts

Some things are negotiable, not having fresh brewed coffee in your camp isn't one of them.

  • “Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death, and sweet as love.” – Turkish Proverb
  • “I don’t need an inspirational quote, what I need is a freaking cup of coffee.” –Unknown
