Jack Burkе Jr., a golf lеgеnd and thе oldеst living Mastеrs champion, passed away at thе age of 100. His rеmarkablе carееr includеd 16 Tour victoriеs, sеcuring wins in both thе PGA Championship and thе Mastеrs in 1956.
Burkе also made a lasting impact as thе captain of thе triumphant 1973 U.S. Rydеr Cup tеam. Inductеd into thе World Golf Hall of Famе in 2000, hе rеcеivеd thе PGA Tour Lifеtimе Achiеvеmеnt Award in 2003. The golfing community mourns the loss of a truе icon whose contributions еxtеndеd beyond thе fairways.
Burkе’s lеgacy is anchorеd in his еxtraordinary victoriеs, notably thе stunning comеback at thе 1956 Mastеrs, whеrе hе ralliеd from 8 shots bеhind to claim victory. His PGA Championship win latеr that yеar solidifiеd his reputation as a dominant force in golf.

Bеyond thе accoladеs, Burkе’s influеncе as a tеachеr was profound. His commitmеnt to thе gamе lеd him to build thе еstееmеd Champions Golf Club in Houston, whеrе hе impartеd not only tеchnical еxpеrtisе but also a touch of homеspun wisdom to aspiring golfеrs.
Rеflеcting on his impactful carееr, Burkе oncе quеstionеd, “Why did golf givе us 34 rulеs whеn God only gavе us 10 commandmеnts?” His sharp wit, couplеd with a kееn undеrstanding of thе gamе, made him a rеvеrеd figurе. Burkе’s passing marks thе еnd of an еra, lеaving bеhind a lеgacy that transcеnds his victoriеs and rеsonatеs in thе hеarts of thosе who wеrе touchеd by his tеachings.
The golfing community mourns the loss of Jack Burkе Jr., with hеartfеlt tributеs pouring in from fеllow lеgеnds likе Phil Mickеlson and Bеn Crеnshaw. Jackiе Burkе passed away today at 100 years old. Thеrе arе many grеat storiеs involving Jackiе, but I'll always apprеciatе how giving of his timе hе was to anyonе who wantеd to lеarn and work at thе gamе of golf. Phil Mickelson on X.
Jackie Burke passed away today at 100 years old. There’s many great stories involving Jackie but I’ll always appreciate how giving of his time he was to anyone who wanted to learn and work at the game of golf. I lost quite a few dinners to him with his 3 foot circle drill but…

Another week, another tournament in the bag. The BMW Championship has wrapped up with a few notable moments. One being Akshay Bhatia’s hole-in-one. The event ultimately ended with another victory for Scottie Scheffler. However, during the event, Ted Scott, Scheffler’s usual caddie, was missing. Instead, Scheffler was paired with Michael Cromie. After his victory at the BMW Championship, Scheffler is singing Cromie’s praises. Why Is Scheffler With Cromie During the St Jude Championship, Ted Scott had to leave due to a family matter. It is unclear what happened, but Scottie Scheffler has sent his best to the Scott family. With Scott leaving after the third round, Scheffler needed a stand-in and found one in Brad Payne. A good friend of Scheffler’s who has filled the role before when Ted Scott was absent in the past. During the BMW Championship, neither Payne nor Scott was able to return as Scheffler’s caddie, so it ultimately fell upon Michael Cromie’s shoulders. Cromie Steps In Cromie is a good friend of Ted Scott and is usually Chris Kirk’s caddie. He had the experience needed to be a good stand-in. According to Scheffler, Cromie had some big shoes to fill, yet somehow he managed. While working together, something clicked between the two, and they became a perfect team. The two synchronized as if they had been working together for years now. Scheffler would go on to praise Cromie as a great teammate in his time of need. Scheffler said in a post-win press conference. “He’s a guy I can trust,” Scheffler said. “He’s one of Ted’s good buddies. I’d just say it’s pretty much as simple as that. Cromie is a guy that works hard. He does his prep work, and he was an easy guy for me to trust out there. I felt like we did a good job of talking through our shots and staying patient and keep doing the right things even when things were looking a little bit squirrelly there on the back nine. We did a good job of staying focused and continuing to hit shots at the right targets. Closed the tournament out nicely.” Scheffler goes on to praise how Cromie kept an “even keel all week.” Scheffler liked how Cromie was able to handle the pressure. He didn’t crack once and continued to be a level-headed teammate. In the end, the two were able to bring home the grand prize of the event together. Will Michael Cromie Stick Around For Scottie Scheffler? At the time of writing, Ted Scott is returning to Scheffler’s side for the Tour Championship. If it comes down to it in the future, Michael Cromie would be a wonderful stand-in if anything happens again. The two clicked well together during the BMW Championship despite the pairing being temporary. Now, whenever Scheffler needs a caddie, Cromie seems like such an obvious choice. After how well the BMW Championship went, Cromie may be on Scheffler’s call list. For now, though, Scheffler and Ted Scott are preparing for the Tour Championship this week.
The Green Bay Packers are dealing with some concerning injuries to significant members of their roster. As their fans are well aware, the Packers have seen multiple wide receivers projected to be at the top of the depth cart go down during training camp with various injuries. Christian Watson, of course, has not been practicing all offseason as he is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 18 against the Chicago Bears. In addition to him, the Packers also played their previous preseason game without Romeo Doubs (back), Jayden Reed (foot) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf). And while Doubs returned to practice this week, Reed and Wicks remain out. Elsewhere around the NFL, other teams are dealing with injuries of their own, and some involve players that are former Packers. Former Green Bay Packers running back Patrick Taylor is out for the 2025-26 NFL season One of these players is former Packers running back Patrick Taylor, who played in Green Bay from 2021-2023. An undrafted free agent who often filled in as Green Bay’s third running back, he accumulated 261 rushing yards and a touchdown in his three seasons with the Packers. He found himself out of a job when the Packers revamped their running back room before the 2024 NFL season. Taylor ended up with the San Francisco 49ers last season and had the best year of his career with 183 rushing yards and a touchdown while appearing in 13 games. He will not be playing any games this season as San Francisco just put him on season-ending injured reserve: NFL teams can only have so many players on an injured reserve list. Interestingly, Taylor’s injury led to the 49ers to release another former Packer, wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, who was placed on injured reserve last week. In order to release an injured player, teams and that player must come to an injury settlement, which St. Brown received. He is now free to sign with any team in the NFL should he be able to pass a physical.
The New York Giants have one of the deepest quarterback rooms in the NFL, and there has been speculation that Jameis Winston could be the odd man out when the regular season begins. It does not sound like Winston is going anywhere, however. Russell Wilson is expected to be the Giants' starting quarterback in Week 1. The big question is whether Jaxson Dart or Winston will enter the year as Wilson's primary backup. Dart has played well through two preseason games, and Brian Daboll and his coaching staff have raved about the former Ole Miss star. Some have wondered if the Giants could entertain trade offers for Winston should they decide they view Dart as their No. 2 quarterback. Assistant general manager Brandon Brown was asked about that on Tuesday, and he all but ruled it out. "I appreciate people that are interested, but Jameis is a New York Giant. The way that he's gone about his business from day one, he's made it very intentional of the fact that he wants to be here and he wants to be here for the long haul," Brown said. "Teammates love him. His preparation process, whether it's the off-field things that he does in terms of community relations, Bible studies, things in the locker room, galvanizing the group together — not just the quarterback room, but the offense as a whole. "He's been comic relief, but he's also been a really good example of how to be a pro and handle your business in terms of prehab, rehab and postgame care. So, I'm happy he's here, and he's gonna continue to do those things. He hasn't wavered, and he hasn't been shaken by any distractions at all." Winston signed a two-year, $8M contract with the Giants in free agency this offseason. The deal could climb as high as $16M with incentives, but he would need to play quite a bit to hit those. The Giants value Winston's extensive experience, just as they value Dart's upside. There is a reason they signed both Wilson and Winston and traded up to draft Dart. They believe in all three players, and they likely will not be inclined to trade Winston unless they receive an excellent offer.
It’s been assumed that Joshua Dobbs would serve as Drake Maye‘s primary backup in 2025, but the veteran quarterback may not have a roster spot secure. According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, Dobbs is not a “lock” to make the Patriots roster. As Volin notes, Dobbs has struggled during training camp and the preseason. He completed only five of his 12 pass attempts in the preseason opener, and he followed that up with two pick-sixes during joint practices with the Vikings. Those performances prompted coach Mike Vrabel to admit that the veteran “has to be more consistent.” Further, Dobbs doesn’t have any prior experience to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, so it’s not like the veteran can help Maye with installing the new system. Plus, the backup is attached to only a $1.7M salary for the 2025 campaign, so there aren’t any financial hurdles that would accompany his release. Of course, there are also a handful of things working in Dobbs’ favor. For starters, the rest of the team’s depth consists of UDFA Ben Wooldridge. Dobbs brings more experience than many backup QBs, as the 30-year-old has garnered 15 starts across seven years in the NFL (including one last year with the 49ers). He also looked much better in the team’s second preseason game, completing 11 of 16 passes for 106 yards and a score. More notes out of New England… While rookie Jared Wilson once seemed prime to open the season as the Patriots left guard, that may no longer be the case. Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald notes that Ben Brown has seemed to pass his rookie teammate at the position, and the veteran garnered the starting spot during the team’s second preseason contest. Brown struggled in 10 starts at center for the Patriots in 2024, but the team’s lack of OL depth may mean they don’t have a better choice. Much has been made of the tough decisions the Patriots will face at the wide receiver position, and an unexpected name has quickly inserted themselves into the picture. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, UDFA Efton Chism has likely played his way on to the 53-man roster. The Eastern Washington product has been a standout this preseason, hauling in 12 catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Chism making the roster would seemingly push Kendrick Bourne, Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker off the squad.
