Brandel Chamblee insists USA can edge Europe with Tiger Woods at Ryder Cup helm

Chamblee believes that there’s a real change happening with Team USA under Tiger Woods, and thinks it could lead to the Americans getting their hands back on the Ryder Cup.

Tiger is set to captain the team for just the first time, and Chamblee feels that his leadership might be exactly what they need.

“I think it will be close but I do give a slight edge to the United States just because of home course advantage and, again, an overall better team,” he said.

“But I think one thing really stands out about this team. In previous years at home in 2016 we had Davis Love III as captain who was very respected. We’ve had Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker – all very respected captains.

“But none of them are Tiger Woods, and he brings something different than what Europe has faced before.”

The Americans certainly have momentum on their side after their Presidents Cup win earlier this year, but Europe can never be ruled out regardless of where they play or who’s captaining either side.

Brandel Chamblee pushes back on claims that Europe will run away with the Ryder Cup

Chamblee has built a reputation for backing up his arguments with hard data, but this time he seems to be trusting his instincts more than the numbers.

Speaking on X, Chamblee addressed claims that Europe would easily handle the Americans at Bethpage, offering a more cautious outlook.

While he’s often pointed out Europe’s stronger sense of team unity, Chamblee hinted that things might not be so straightforward for the visitors this time around.

He said: “There is no event in golf more compelling than the Ryder Cup and Bethpage will likely be the rowdiest of them all.”

If Europe want to get over the line in New York, every single one of their players will have to bring their best from start to finish.

How every European player has performed in away Ryder Cup matches

Luke Donald might not have the most experienced squad, but with Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy among the leaders, there’s plenty of knowledge to lean on when it comes to playing Ryder Cups on American soil.

Here’s a look at how each member of this year’s European team has performed in away matches:

Player Away Ryder Cups Overall Record Points won
Justin Rose 3 (2008, 2012, 2016) 8-6-2000 8
Rory McIlroy 3 (2012, 2016, 2021) 7-7-2000 7
Matthew Fitzpatrick 2 (2016, 2021) 0-5-0 0
Jon Rahm 1 (2021) 3-1-2001 3.5
Tyrrell Hatton 1 (2021) 1-2-2001 1.5
Shane Lowry 1 (2021) 1-2-2000 1
Tommy Fleetwood 1 (2021) 2000-1-2 1
Viktor Hovland 1 (2021) 2000-3-2 1
Robert MacIntyre 0
Sepp Straka 0
Ludvig Aberg 0
Rasmus Højgaard Rookie

Outside of McIlroy, Rose and Jon Rahm, success has been hard to come by for the rest of the squad when playing in the U.S.

And given how intense Bethpage is expected to be, it could be a tough ask for them to turn those records around this time.

Chamblee is absolutely right to point out how hostile that crowd can be. It’s not the kind of place where you’d expect Europe to run away with it.
