Cameron Young Blasts Off Into Contention at Rocket Classic

“It felt like I had a 10-footer for birdie on pretty much every hole,” he said. “I made a bunch of them in a row on my front nine.”

He added two more birdies on his back nine, grabbing a share of the 36-hole lead with a 9-under 61. 

Young has won twice this season, chasing down Matt Fitzpatrick at the Players Championship before winning by six shots at the Cadillac Championship. Young finished T10 at the Truist Championship, his first start since his win at the Cadillac, but finished outside the top 25 in his next four tournaments.

But after a runner-up finish at the Open Championship, Young feels he is back on the right track, encouraged by his progress even if the wins haven’t come in recent months.

“That’s the main difficulty of golf,” Young said. “Any time you feel like that, it’s difficult to some extent. You wonder am I missing something, why is this the way that it is, why is it not working, all those things.

“But when it goes well, it feels totally the opposite. When it goes well, it feels like you never will play bad again. It just comes and goes. You kind of have to be ready for either one. At some point it’s going to get harder and at some point, you’ll come out of that difficult period and it will feel easy again. It’s kind of just a game of being ready for whatever comes next.”
