Charlie Woods continues to struggle with another blow following his father’s DUI arrest and subsequent exit from the country.
Woods, 17, competed at a U.S. Open qualifying tournament this week, where he had high expectations. However, he couldn’t make it to the final qualifying due to a heartbreaking loss.
The kid showed up at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida. He was close to making the cut, but a rough start ruined his chances of forcing a playoff.
After he carded a bogey on the first hole of Tuesday, Charlie Woods had to come from behind all day long. He had a boost on the back nine, but it wasn’t enough, as he struggled on the final three holes.
“A birdie three at the par-4 sixth returned him to level par for the day, only for the 17-year-old to find trouble on the 171-yard par-3 seventh and walk away with a double-bogey. Having made the turn in 38 strokes, Woods knew he would have to dig deep to make it through and he set about producing it with birdies at the par-5 10th and par-4 12th,” Jonny Leighfield of Golf Monthly wrote. “Unfortunately, the Florida-born amateur made par at each of the final three holes to leave himself in a large tie for 10th and wondering what might have been.”
He fell one stroke short of forcing a playoff at a tournament that has been elusive for the kid.
Just like Tony Romo, Charlie Woods will have to wait before getting another chance at qualifying for the U.S. Open.
